FAQ
How did Rehab to Racing get started?
As a PT working with athletes, there seemed to be a void when the athlete was finished with his in-office physical therapy, but he was not ready to go back to his former workout schedule, whether he was self-coached or with a coach. So I started getting calls from athletes that said they knew I was a PT and a triathlete and what could and couldn’t they do now.
The other group of clients that we started hearing from was those athletes who were chronically injured; that person with the hamstring that always flared up in the middle of the season, or the person who couldn’t shake the plantar fasciitis. So, we figured that there was a need for Rehab to Racing.
Who is Rehab to Racing?
Allen DeLaney is a physician and an engineer. He has been the medical director for a large orthopedic practice here in Northern VA for several years. He is a board-certified anesthesiologist.
Mary DeLaney a Physical Therapist who has worked in sports medicine, orthopedics and acute care. Currently she sees patients in the Home Care setting.
Both Mary and Al are USAT certified coaches. They have been runners for many years and triathletes for 10 of those years. We live in Northern Virginia.
Why would an athlete choose Rehab to Racing?
The athlete who chooses Rehab to Racing wants personal coaching. There are no canned programs and no assistants. We write each schedule individually. Our focus is assisting that athlete who has a special need, whether it is a chronic physical problem, an acute injury or someone who has plateaued with whatever workout scheme he or she is using and wants to push to achieve her maximum potential. The older athlete also has special needs. A training program you might read about in the magazines is not written for the over 40 age group. The cycles are just too long. We have developed programs tailored specifically for that age group, and older ones.
If you need access to the medical system, we can get that for you. Sometimes an athlete may need some diagnostic testing to confirm what the problem is, such as an MRI. If that is indicated we can either refer you to the proper source or consult with your physician about it.
I already have a coach. Can I just have a consultation with Rehab to Racing?
We do one-time consultations and are happy to discuss that with you and your coach. We also have clients that have had their coach “freeze” their training program because they simply cannot handle it or are consistently getting injured. We “coach that person through their injury” and then they can return to their own coach, if they wish. Because of Mary’s background in physical therapy, Rehab to Racing in uniquely qualified for exactly that.
What services are available from Rehab to Racing?
In addition to one-time consultations, we offer coaching and training programs for endurance athletes. Included in the training are specific exercise programs to meet the needs of that athlete. We also do bike fittings, gait and swim stroke evaluations. Mary and Al also are available to speak to community groups about a variety of topics in their fields.
How is a program for an injured athlete different from any other?
When you become our client, you will first fill out a medical history form, so we can understand what has happened in the past. You will have a manual muscle strength test of your arms, legs and core. We will also test your flexibility. We will evaluate your swim stroke, your gait (running) pattern, and your bike fit. We will discuss with you your lifestyle, time constraints and diet. Then we put all that information together and based on that, discuss your goals and how we can best help you achieve them.
Do I have to live in Northern Virginia to be a client?
No, we coach via the internet, but if you are an injured athlete, we will need to make some special arrangements. We send monthly schedules via email.
How do I pay you?
Currently, we accept payment by check, but are expanding to other payment methods.
I have some specific questions about my problem. How do I contact you?
